It's not as bad on the ground as all this financial talk makes out. Everyone I know is still doing as well as they were a few years back, some better. My wife and I have managed to increase our yearly income this year. I recently took part in Bazaar, a seasonal market here in Zagreb, and was surprised by how much of my work I sold as it was the first time I've ever had a market stall. I guess it is Christmas time and people need to spend to stimulate the economy. If only they were getting some tax breaks and other incentives to do so. As it is, the price of some essential services (heating)is going up 25% and yet wages and pensions stay the same Having an obrt still costs a small fortune in monthly 'doprinost' (social security payments) regardless of whether you make any money or not in any given month. Ridiculous when you consider that employed people pay a percentage of their income. So much for small business stimulation. On another thought, I have this feeling that the large black economy here is actually going to help Croatia stay afloat locally.
