Just saw this this link 26. 06. 13. - 09:30 Over 260,000 Croats have their bank accounts blocked Croatian Times The bank accounts of 260,832 Croatian citizens were blocked because of debt in May 2013, national financial agency Fina has said. According to the news website Index, there was an increase in the number of people with blocked bank accounts with 2,529 more accounts blocked in comparison to April 2013. The total amount of money owed is thought to be around 19.7 billion kuna. www.croatiantimes.com/?id=34087Questions Who are these citizens? Individuals or businesses? What kind of debt? What can they block? If you are in debt, what is there to block? Something just came to mind. Could it be that you have money, however, you choose not to pay your bills? Now that there are mortgages and car loans, etc. I see more Croatians are in debt. Living beyond their means, trying to impress people they don't even like in the first place. I just don't get it. If you are in debt, that means that you have bills. So is it because monies go directly to the bank you don't get those funds if you owe, or is it that they pull your credit card and/or debit card? Maybe I'm just having a Senior Moment? LOL |

I know someone who it happened to once. They were in dispute with their accountant about some charges she'd randomly made up for a service they say they didn't request (and I think they were pretty much saying that they did not receive it anyway).
They said "we'll discuss it with you, but we are not going to pay any amount you write down on a racun". So she got their bank account blocked until they agreed to pay up.
It wasn't me BTW, but I was familiar with both parties, and lets just say I had good reason to believe the people whose account was blocked.

LOL Yep, it's a very strange phenomenon in Croatia, where the government can just block your account, but then so is allowing people not to pay their taxes for years at a time. I got my d.o.o closed down without notification, and only found out when I went to the local registrar to sign over the company into my wife's name. Found out it was closed for over 6 months and we where still in business (and not one letter of notification). But you would be shocked at how many companies and individuals owe others money, owe taxes etc. So, this is a good thing. |
