me and a friend are flying out to split at the beginning of september - we are planning to buy a car there for around 400-500 Euros and take it on a road trip up the coast and then back to the UK at the end. What we are unsure about is how we go about buying the car/taxing it/insuring it and generally getting it going. I found this website which acts as a guide but do we need to do all of this if the car is already registered? What paper work would we need? www.croatia-split.com/blog/getting-there-and-around/10-steps-to-registering-a-car-in-split.htmlIf anyone could help we would be really grateful - if you know of any small festivals or sick bars/beach spots/islands to go to it would also be much appreciated!

Mates, good luck on finding a car for 500 Euros (even a junker costs about 1500 to 2500 Euros). No such luck in HR for cheap cars. My suggestion is to buy a left hand drive diesel car in UK, drive to Croatia, do your tour then drive back to UK. If two people drive you can do the UK to Zagreb in 18 to 20 hours. To save money you can cross the channel by ferry at 2am for around £25 (up to 4 persons). There are a number of insurance companies that will give you up to 2 months on the continent. ASDA also offer insurance for 365 days, but you must be normally resident in the UK. A green card is not needed. Make sure you bring both parts of your drivers license and insurance notice.

I don't think it is possible for you to register a car in Croatia anyway. BTW what is a sick bar, i searched for a definition, but no wiser. January, showing your age mate. Sick bar, like totally sick man. Meaning really good happening place dude. You can also have a sick car, or the concert was sick, even an idea can be sick, all meaning really good basically. Anyway, as has been said, the only car you'll find here for that money is 1 that doesn't run. Cars are far cheaper in the UK or Germany. As for sick bars and party places, maybe look here www.croatia-beaches.com/party/best_party_beaches_croatia.htm

Could be special "code" for crawling hospital cafeteria's and coffee shops? I'd get sick of that after my first visit. Anyway, be cool, enjoy the hot chicks and have a gay ol time (happy) time.... all double meaning! No wonder English is confusing.

that what we need sorry - a fabdabadoozy place, either that or some nice beach bars that run into the early hours? We are pretty set on buying a car out there, we dont really care if its old and banged up, just as long as it can go another 2000 miles. something like this... www.ooyyo.net/detail/c=CD5A2F7114D2854F111B4A6FB7643553CCA2168517D38660061CD46D/4467309897807768818.html/say if we flew out there and bought that, what would we have to do to be able to drive it around and then back to the UK? I know this type of vehicle goes against your morals january but any help would be appreciated!

I agree with the other posters, it's not really feasible to buy a car and insure and tax it as a non-resident of Croatia. Also, the prices for both insurance and road tax are not cheap and you'll have to pay for the full year in advance.
That 100euro VW has 500,000 km on it ... not sure it would make it to the Croatian coast let alone down and all the way back to the UK !
