My lawyer says she needs my OIB number to put in the purchase contract for the house I'm buying in Croatia. Initially the property will be a holiday home so do I have to get this number? I have a tax number in Hungary but I don't have an I/D card so I wondered if she is correct on this?

yES, YOU MUST HAVE THIS NUMBER. If you have to pay any Croatian tax (apart from vat or the tourist tax), then you need this number. The only thing is I have no idea how you would get one since you don't have a local croatian tax office who would normally issue it to you.
Our contracts always used to define people by their full name, address and passport number (plus issuing authority). I wonder if the law has changed or if your lawyer is unable to get her head around the fact that you are not a croatian? If the latter, then get a new lawyer because that level of inflexibility of thought is scary if you are relying on the lawyer to use her head to check the property documentation.

Thanks for the link gmh. It looks like there is no tax number as such in Croatia so that's why I need the OIB number, to pay the 5% transfer tax. I will have to find the tax office in Koprivnica and ask them for a number.

Hi fidobsa, can I ask where in Croatia you have decided to buy and why. The reason I ask is we have been reaching counties to move or have winter retreat to for some time now.

I am actually only moving 80km from a village in south west Hungary to a small village in north east Croatia. The reason for choosing that area is that initially I will be splitting my time between Hungary and Croatia so I wanted somewhere handy. The reason for moving is because I feel there would be less of a language barrier in Croatia. Another advantage of that part of Croatia is the house prices are lower than at the coast. The house I'm buying needs some renovation and modernisation but is only 14,000 Euros.
