I have just received a bill which I think must be the equivalent of UK Council Tax but much more limited in scope, just covering aspects of infrastructure such as street lighting, roads, electricity and water systems. I don't know if I will get several such bills each year but there are 2 payment slips, each 66.18 Kn but one payable before 30.09.2014 the other before 30.11.2014. This seems to be calculated on living space but I understand there is a replacement tax in the pipeline, based on property value. Does anyone have any recent information about this new tax? On the face of it, the current charges seem quite a bargain in my case, as each house in my lane has its own street lamp. I would think a similar very rural area in UK would not have street lighting.

You're right, this is a version of 'rates' called 'komunalna naknada' (Community charge) and is usually billed on a quarterly basis. The new tax is far from agreed and there is a big remaining question.... Who will decide the value of the property? Personally, I don't see that bird ever flying, we'll see.
