Is the EU a good thing for Croatia?? Perhaps. Certainly there are tantalizing potential positives, but at what cost? Will Croatia be able to restructure the tax system, or will the EU insist upon guidelines in keeping with its member countries?? The EU has its own agenda, and I will cite a case to illustrate my point. Two years ago the EU passed a directive banning all nutritional supplements including vitamins, herbs, etc. And is set to be put into force in less than a year. These items will only be available by prescription through a doctor. Why? Because of the greedy pharmaceutical lobby which is very strong. Currently the directive is being opposed by an organization in England, the National Alliance for Alternative Health and they have so far won the first round. This directive also impacts the US and other World Trade Organization member countries. WTO members are bound to comply to these EU trade directives. Now this may seem like an insignifant issue to you if you have no interest in alternative health care. But it is a right to be able to decide whether one wants to take vitamins, herbs or whatever. And this is but one example, who knows what other directives meant to "protect" us will be forced upon us by the EU and global corporate greed....that are some not so pretty things brewing beneath this lovely, "all for one, one for all" mentality that we no nothing about. You are correct about positives at what cost! The E.U. will have control over how many vinyards that Croatia can have and other things like Olive farms, Lavander farms. Once We have EU..... You will not just be able to start olive farm or vinyard. It will all be controled. In the US... no one stops you if you want to start your own farm. Why should Croatia be controled in that way...

FOR EU membership (1) Being part of the biggest market place on the globe. If HR is in, it will be part of the most powerful buying and price fixing cartel. The EU is trying to muscle the US out of the market dominating position. Anyone outside of the big "gangs" will be financially weak and exploited irrespective of how hard they work. (2) It's hard to see how inter-state military conflicts will ever arise if we are bound together. Us Europeans have a bad record in this regard. AGAINST(1) We all lose an amount of individuality. (2) All big gangs have rules which cannot suit everyone, we all feel as though the EU rules are better for other states than our own. Luckily for all of us, the ballot box will decide. Me? I'm for it, if only because the alternative is worse.

It does not make it right just because everyone else is going along with it like sheep.... What kind of world is this, if you don't join you are going to pressured by the big guys till you break....It sounds like the EU is a dictatorship. I think I would like to keep Cro identity and culture, I believe all small countries joining the EU will lose their culture and traditions. Small countries will just become another England or America swallowed up and homogenous.

In my heart, I agree with you Buba. National differences make the world a far more interesting place, if only we could stop bombing each other. It seems to me that we can't. Shame isn't it. In my head (I really mean my money pocket!) then it seems to be difficult although Norway seems to be doing OK. Currently I'm living in west London for a while, we are flooded with Poles, Lithuanians, Latvians, Czechs, Slovaks.... If Croatia joins the EU, this will likely mean that thousands of talented, self -determined and valuable young Croats will leave home to make their way in the UK. Most choose the UK because of it's multi-culturalist approach and that English is the chosen 2nd language. This will be good for the UK but who will be left in Croatia. As someone who's heart is in Medjimurje, this is a worry.
