This could be an interesting thread.
Handball .... I've always found it difficult to like the sport, it seems so easy to score goals, the goalkeepers seem to have little or no chance of stopping a goal. We don't play the sport here, so I guess there are parts of the game that I don't appreciate due to my ignorance of the rules etc...
I've tried to get the know the different rules etc...but there seems little to stop continous scoring.
At least basketball is controlled by having to bounce the ball to stop the 'travelling' infringement, and the hoop is quite a small target, but handball just seems too easy to make enjoyable watching. I also was a great admirer of the football team that qualified for the Euro Championships in 1992, what a team that was !
Where did handball originate?

there is some handball in Ireland, but our own native sports are so strong, that only big sports like soccer and horse pursuits can keep pace. Handball's a marginal sport and while concentrated on in some countries, it's not a world sport in trh truest sense like soccer. But it is fun to play.
skiing is very marginal and in fairness, do you expect to know skiiers if you live in Saudi Arabia? there's little or no snow in Ireland and while many go for ski holidays, you need snow to practice.
Maybe guest you've heard of Gaelic Football or Hurling? The latter which is the fastest field game in the world and older by far than most international sports.

Irac, Do the Scots also play the game "hurling"? It sounds familiar to me. In my hometown we have a Highland Games festival in the summer, I'm wondering if I've seen it played there.
As for handball, I've watched it in the Olympics, but I got bored quickly. Most of my friends in Canada went for outdoor sports (football, soccer, field hockey, skiing) except for of course real hockey (cancelled this season...) The only time we played handball was in elementary school, so I can't really remember what the rules are. Have Croatian people always watched it, or are they just starting to appreciate it now that they won? I guess I don't understand it because I don't know the rules.

Hey Shannon, I think handball has been big here for a while, it's already big in other countries in EUrope like Germany and in Scandanavia. I suppose like skiing or such it's a winter type sport, or one play indoors, in Ireland we've got most of ours played outdoors (plus we could never afford big gyms ;D )
The game in Scotland is SHinty, I don't know if it came from hurling as Ice Hockey did, in fact I think it just developed parallel or independently. It's a lot different to our game, but very skilful and just as fast, well, not quite, but it's good to watch.

yes, I love it, sports that is. All kinds, even the ones that some people find odd and confusing I try my best to enjoy and make sense of, though I do prefer to play than watch.

I have seen the volleyball, it's good, I actually like Jarun but a lot of people I know say its for peasant and that only people who can't afford to go to the coast go there.
Strange attitude, I think with a little investment it could be a wonderful centre of sports for Zagreb

Irish summer means the arrival of our national sports, and now soccer, but summer in ireland is the best time for sports addicts. Everyone out supporting their counties, clubs and parishes in a wave of colours and emotion (is that too flowery?), but it is a great time and we live for weekends in our house.
