Very interesting article, thank you for posting it. I hope that those who believe there is an Anti-Croatian witch hunt will see the other side now.
I agree that the pressure the Eu placed on the government here has changed things. Hopefully Croatia can put forward its case well and honestly and we can continue to enjoy a country that seems to finally showing some progress.

The connection of Gotovina and joining the EU is absolutely wrong.
If we would start applying rules and regulations like that we can also accuse Bush and Blair for starting an illegal war in Iraq and we are not doing that or are we ?

So Croatia has a better chance of joining the EU now or does it? What are the other requirements, any laws or standards to be changed? The kind of corruption that exist on all levels is not really compatible with EU practices. I have a feeling CRO government will actually put the brakes on themselves. Enlighten me please, my Croatian heritage leaves me very sceptical.

This woman influenced Croatia only in a negative way. The important issues have been put away and everything focused on one innocent man.

Carla Del Ponte should be tried, convicted, and executed for interfering with Croatia's EU bid. I'm sure we can find some international laws she has violated or something even better. Anyone have any good ideas?
great article and i agree with the german official that Turkey does not belong in the EU....for a variety of reasons. I'm not too happy that it will be a Croatia and Turkey bid....unless of course Turkey doesn't get in, Croatia does. Then it will look good. Zivjeli

30 something u?
One ridiculous charge deserves another my little english friend.
Well, If she's innocent she can prove that at in the Hague court. She is interfering with the soverignty and national security of an independent Republic. That's not laughing matter. How many people are suffering from lack of EU assistance because of her? How many will live in poverty? I mean, come on dude, you think holding Croatia out is that trivial?
I think she should be provided with a court appointed attorney and have the right to defend herself against the allegations, if it takes 6 days or six years. Thats giving her the same courtesy she affords her alleged criminals.

huh ... I really dont care about EU, but ...
1. There was no progress in Hague cooperation. Gotovina is dis/located before same as he was today.
2. Croatia lost pace in reforms of legal system in all segments.
3. Economy is in worse shape then 2 or 3 years ago.
4. Investments are on "positive zero" (let me be optimist for a sec.).
5. Support for EU droped below 30 percent
So, there is no single "reason" for sudden "change" comeing from Croatian side. Everything is worse then year ago.
So, because I believe "devil indeed is in details" - EU is not in same situation then year or 2 years ago.
Personaly and honnestly, I think EU should concentrate more on Ukraina and Turkey, trying to create some friends ... Croatia will not enter EU and "friendship is lost". Also, goverment which will start negotians with EU is 100 percent loosing next elections.
I accept bets from now on ...

Well, I honnestly care about EU as I care about last winters snow ...
But both Croam and Emiz touched point.
It is indeed "court game". Gotovina is main figure and he indeed is "remotly sentenced" over back of Croatian citizens.
Let me explain ... Support for EU was almost 87 percent. Then Gotovina entered "personal legal space" of each Croatian citizen in moment when EU decided to "colect" their and Gotovinas case, creating single "dynamical case" from those "separate cases".
So, because Gotovina was "out of reach", Croatian citizens was politicaly judged instead of him. EU gave Del Ponte "free mandate" for such process.
So ... If you measure "support" for EU droping from 87 on 28 percents, you can easy measure how many people feel "remotely prosecuted".
This is known legal/political issue, not development of my mind.
So, indeed Croatians are "guilty" and Eu did "remote prosecution" over their "self-guilt".
Also, what would they do together, and how would one "sorry" help ? Eu just started process which will in next 35 years develop in same what developed in other parts of world in last 35 years. Shame they choosed Croatia ... but, what can we do ... barbarians alway find some "deep and dark hole" to come from it when you less expect ...
