"croatian food" what croatian food? sarma is croatian. ? burek? cevape? croatians favorite..."baked chicken with potatos"? aaaaaa dont think so. the only original croatian food ( at least i think its original to croatia )is "soparnik "its nice and "bikla" red wine mixed with goats milk.

Every language borrows some words from other languages. For example words found in English once borrowed from French: unique, torture, souvenir. sabotage, route, salvage, restaurant, regal, regime, queue, mortgage, debris, crayon etc. Sorry but enough about the language..... Lets talk lettuce ;D

Food belongs to no one... lets take the darwin theory and everything evolved from nothing so no one can take credit for any dishes. Problem solved.

what about štrukli, bazlamaèa (zlevanka), prosena kaša (millet), heljdina kaša (buckwheat) , presnac, pašticada, istarski fuži, fritule, jota, blitva na lešo, paprenjaci, smokvenjak, rožata, pršut, kulen, pašta-fažol, žganci, grah s repom.....
and of course, many of those dishes are influenced by other cuisines, but it's all truly traditional croatian food (from different parts of the country).
nobody ever said that cevapi or burek were traditional croatian food.

Is there aynthing that can be called traditional food, apart from something with goat or chicken in it?
Irish traditional is potatoes and cabbage, yet it's recent as we had to get the spuds from the New World (I think the Spanish introduced them first). Cevapi's seem to be very much Turkish or Middle Eastern in origin, as I'd seen them there with not dissimiliar name and form. One thing they lack here are baked beans, I'd have thought with the weather they'd be a steal!

Instead of baked beans there's a sort of beans and sausagses soup that's pretty traditional. Just white or red beans with sausages, that's pretty much it. When we hiked up Sljeme they had it at Puntijarka, one of the places along the hiking trails up top, and it was the perfect thing to eat in the middle of a day of hiking.

There are different variations of this soup. Made with sausage like you had or with ham or bacon. Very hardy filling soup especially nice on a cold winters day.

Whoa! If you want to try the best food in Croatia, then come round to my girlfriends mother's for dinner... the guys in the family are keen hunters, so there's always a supply of rabbit, deer and wild boar - it's fantastic.
Family BBQ's are brilliant - standing around a (whole) pig roasting on the spit whilst drinking homemade wine...

I bought some tinned meat in Getro that seemed to be the same as corned beef. It was an italian product. I even made corned beef hash with it.

On the bean front, Grah (croatian bean soup) is far superior to tinned baked beans. If you want tinned baked beans, you can buy HP brand in ipercoop at King Cross in Jankomir.

almost forgot, yesterday i had my first Zagreb schnitzel. A huge thin peice of veal that you put ham and cheese in , then wrap it up, crumb it and fry it. Severd with tartar sauce. It was delicious, and so big that i could barely move for an hour after.

Not exactly Croatian food, we have a similar 'local dish' known as a parmo, but nevertheless very nice.
