Noddy....This website is a sit-com in waiting. So glad you are...enjoying it. Nip in to English Man Living in Zagreb.....which is a priceless event on these boards.
It's autumn in Croatia. That means Jugo and then Burra...The winds. One warm, with no air in it from the south, and the other.....cold, from the north. The Croats hibernate at this time.
Winter food is 'grah' and more 'grah'..... I think they light the farts for heating. You hear the odd explosion...Which can be - containers being straightened, at the docks. Miners in tunnels or mines. Enemy fire? nah. Or Croats blowing up from pre-ignition. It's all part of the Croatia experience.

croatia , small as it is , have 4 basically different cuisines it is hard to believe that u cannot find a taste for yourself on the other hand , I understand your need for curry , but it is not our taste here we are not grown on indian specialities people here mostly likes simplier and purer tastes when something is supposed to be salty , we dont add sugar and under term puding , we eat something sweet I have never been in britan , but when I came somewhere I had to adjust and submit to domestic taste , or to make changes that were possible , like to beg that my piece of beef comes without marmelade

lol, this thread has cracked me up.
the food in croatia, well lets just say that in 2 months i put on 8 kilos. croatia is the land of 8 meals a day, you walk into someones house and, if you dont want to eat, be prepared to get into a confrontation that can turn physical at any given moment. if you can manage to stay in a small village, even better, people make their own wine, olive oil.. lunch takes 3 hours, but what else are you going to do? work? yeah right
many a time, a planned 5 minute visit to my aunt's house to pick up clothes ended up taking all day, those litre bottles of karlovacko are a thing of beauty... the availability of beer in croatia is great, and if you can manage it, eat some sardele(spelling?)/sardines grilled on a barbeque, you can polish off about 30 of those suckers no worries. octopus, squid, fish, blitve, zelje, all good all good
but complaints about croatian people can be justified, theyre all very tempremental, they can either love you off the bat or they view you with great suspicion and treat you with contempt... i made many a friend at many a cafic just by drinking and talking . oh, and the time i passed out and had to hitchhike across korcula because i missed the ferry i made some very good friends from lumbarda who even paid for my ticket to the game, which for 17 year old croatians is quite an expenditure

Interesting that you mentioned Korcula island......right now my cousin and her husband are there picking their olives and producing Olive Oil. How pure can that be! I've heard that the food produced on Korcula is the very best. I can't wait to visit that island next time I'm in Croatia.
I know what you mean about the people offering you food, its an insult if you don't partake. When I watched that movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding I laugh the whole way through especially when they protrayed anything to do with eating, visitng, parties or just gathering around a table.
Life is too short enjoy!

I totally know what you mean about the Big Fat Greek Wedding thing and partaking of food!!!
When I met my husband's family in Greece for the first time, I had been a vegetarian for nine years. When I told them, no I would not be eating the souvlaki, the whole room, literally, fell silent.
Do you remember the scence where her aunt just throws her up hands and says, "Ah well! I'll make lamb!"?? Word for word, that's practically how it went. I laughed like crazy when I saw the movie afterwards.
Is it like that here? Can't say. But they do seem insulted when you look somewhat askance at good old Uncle Ivo's homemade firewater liquer!

Ahh..Croatian Food. Nothing is better. I live in Canada and i can tell you its like England and the US, the food is horrible. ok ok the apples might be good but whats an apple?? Croatian food is fresh, healthy and most of all delicious. You guys keep rambling on about food that you eat in your home country and how it is better...well i think not. Canada th US and ENgland dont have their own cuisine unless you count a burger as cusisine So i dont see why you are complaingin their food in croatia is AMAZING!! ;D

One is honoured that this thread survives so long. But I still think the food is bland beyond belief. Meals......6 hour sessions. Visit people. Bring a matress! Pasta, kruah, dead animals, dead fish...quite nice the dead fish. More vino...galllons. Walnut...thingies...Cakes, flans, pies...groan. Pick the bits from your teeth. Croatia is the land of ....slatko......... And what's all this borrox about not being tradionally a land of spices. Afghanistan...That's where the Croats came from. Like it or loathe it. The music is Indian influenced.....What the hell happened to the food?

Bluemouse - I love Croatian food and you're right, you do have a lot of choice. But, until you taste Heinz beans you will never understand why we Brits miss them so much!!
