On the contrary : I don't think the beloved good ship "EU" will sink ; it needs a few more repairs in the coming years , following piracy and hijacks in high seas ( quite the opposite to what many have thought was negotiated and mutually agreed , as per various signed treaties , but which will all become meaningless and be swept under the carpet ) , some might indeed jump the good ship in the proccess ( or : not ? ) and and the full nature of the beast will then be eventually revealed ( like in G. Orwell's works ) . The Plan could prove itself to work very well , for those in control , the decision and rules' makers - and also for selected and able among their allies and collaborators ; where it leaves the rest of the member-states is not yet clear - I would bet on good long-term gains for some ( but first and foremost e.g. Germans , French , Dutch , Italians , Skandies , even Bruxellois ) when all is said and done . Somewhere it was written : the poor will always be with you ; but the Frenchman retorted : Apres moi , le deluge !

Guys, never write off Germans. BBC these days is full of documentaries praising German economy, manufacturing..etc, highlighting too much dependence of UK economy on financial "services". Chinese PM comes to Britain recently and signs 1 billion manufacturing deal with the UK...everyone here full of praises for the resurgence of British manufacturing...next day China man stops at Berlin and sings 10 billion deal.. . British government itself recently sings multibillion deal with Siemens to manufacture trains...while right in Derby, the heartland of British manufacturing, they sidelined the only British train manufacturer - Bombardier, resulting in 1400 job losses. Small countries? They can not stay alone, they have to "choose" alliances. Croatia's choice is natural - Germany. UK's alliance to the US, IMHO will eventually cost them dearly. US is sinking ship.

I tend to agree : Germany will be very much in charge of EU and of most of the continent , the way the things are going ; to what extent such developments may benefit the smaller , weaker and poorer EU-members ? Many schools of thought on that answer , one thing is clear and that is that there is much hope and expectation hanging on the results of last Friday's announcements ( undemocratic , as they are ! - but then , too many current members of the enlarged EU wouldn't know democracy from a dictatorship , so that worries them the least , at the moment ) . I have not checked : have the Czechs and the Swedes signed yet ?

Ray....two questions ponder my head in general..not as a reference to anything you specificaly write about, but nonetheless would like your views, as always:
1. What is real democracy and which country today is close to being democratic country? (UK - 3 main parties...US - 2 parties.....I think it is a joke)
2. Giving up sovereignty you see as a main problem of Euro state. Well, my view is that countries like UK and US have long ago given up their sovereignty to the markets..which are quite unregulated (at least it is almost everyone's view the markets need better regulations after what's been happening since 2007/2008). And hardly anyone would disagree that people employed by financial markets are the greediest bunch (and yet, they say they do not need regulations..haha..). Being greedy and overpaid bureaucrats of Brussels is another criticism you often put on the Eurostate...which I do not disagree with...only I do not see them as greedy and as overpaid as the guys who run casinos in the City and the Wall Street..generating enough cash to completely "regulate" Downing Street and The White House...who in turn will take away our (tax payer's money) to cover their losses, amongst other things, so that Casino parties can go on.
Then, Markets will say they need short term stability and they get UK and US governments to print Monopoly money. It does not matter that history of Japan crisis clearly shows printing money will not solve, nor help anything. All it does is exactly what Markets want it to do, provide temporary calm, postponing the Judgment Day.
So, Ray, does it sound over-simplistic to put it like this: Two choices:
1. Giving up sovereignty to the Markets
2. Giving up sovereignty to the Brussels
Question: Whatever democracy today is or should be, IMHO, Brussels way is slightly more democratic than the Markets way. What do you think?

WOW Mike Kelly for president ;D A guy from the private sector with some real answers. People mock the new Greek govt as its full of "non-professional" politicians most are from a business background. Watch how well that works out over the next few months and years. Anyone who still beleives that their vote counts and that politicians anywhere are in the buisness for anything other than personal reward and stauture are kidding themselves. EU goverrnance or City of London governance, I think I would choose the EU option as the lesser of the two evils.

MG...how about our own Croatian breed Don Vinko Grubisic...who has just been elected into our parliament. He is not going to be receiving any salary, will continue to live only on his pension.
Although I disagree with many of his views, I must say that is something else.
(It is certainly not the same as Chilean president who also does not receive salary..being the richest man in Chile anyways).

Looks more like "Danke , Deutschland" again ( ?! ) ; since it takes a lot of time , effort , patience , hard-bloody-mindedness and tons of money ( inter alia ) to fight for the inherently-flawed projects that the EU and the Euro-currency-zone so obviously are ... Therefore , I suggest to my fellow Croats ( as explained to me at Weatherspoon's pub , last night ) : don't fight the Germans on the beaches , for the beach chairs , nor for the towels , nor for the sun-umbrellas ; let them fight it out with the Russians ( Adriatic should be that Lucky ! ) ?

NOT for the 4th Reich ! ( Yet ? ) But then , given CRO history , 2nd WW , average Homo Zagrebiensis' blind infatuation with all and any things German...(?) For last 20 years+ , it deeply hurts to observe how the "nation" from where I originate just CAN'T WAIT to turn themselves into Krauts' slaves and exploited servants again .
To those who can : VOTE U.K.I.P !

And all please remember one of the many valid things said by Winston Churchill.
"It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government, except all the others that have been tried".
