Limescale is found in large quantities in tap water all over Croatia, because, well, most of the soil here is limestone, unlike the soil in some other countries. Quality of water varies hugely even within Zagreb. Water on coast tastes much better, especially in hilly parts. My favorite tap water is in Kvarner, I guess it comes from Ucka.
Anyways, this topic is silly. It's true that there is less crime in Croatia than in urban areas of UK, but that by itself can't be a sole reason for preferring life here. We have our own problems and they're huge enough. As for TV, it's brainless everywhere, as are all other things that mirror an average consumer.
It all comes down to a personal opinion. Capio and PeeVee can't stand Croatia and are very vocal about that fact, GMH and others are in love with it, but in the end you really can't compare apples and oranges.

Justapixel, you've hit the nail right on the head, it depends on what you want to see and where you want to be. This "mine is bigger than yours" is such nonsense, and when non-natives buy into it it's even more nonsensical. Like one of our players said tonight, it's easy to say one place is the best in the world, when you haven't been anywhere, or you haven't been ot every place in the world. Better to say "it's good enough for me, thanks".

May I humbly say that I LOVE the UK!
I am Croatian born and lived there for almost the first 30 years of my life there. A bit longer I lived in the UK (London). Absolutely adore here: every time I come back(since I retired I travel a lot), I have urge to do the Pope thing and kiss the ground.
The UK is not perfect, but still one of the best country in the world. IMHO!
I know Croatia well and spend a month or two every year there: not bad, lovely country, lovely people, but I still prefer the UK.
I hope I have not upset anybody with this post!

Yes Mirko, you have upset me, how dare you choose an country over another ;D Honestly it's nice to see someone who moves away appreciate where they live, as I think most folks do. I mean, while I miss Abrakebabra, I love our local cevapis. While I miss the occasional pleasure of an Irish breakfast (Ulster fries and the English variety included) I like sitting on one of the balconies and drinking Dublin Tea Co. while looking across at a castle. I love visiting the UK, even Wales (except Pontypool, for sporting reasons) but would find it hard to live there right now and it's down to job satisfaction, leisure pursuits and 4 dogs to look after. There's always more than one place to call home and when you try to run down one place to build up another, you gotta ask yourself....why?

Well to state the obvious, a lot of where you live is decided by personal circumstance. The UK is overcrowded and I think has a real identity problem. Then again corruption in Croatia seems to exist at all levels and in all institutions. I know one young man who was told that if he had any problems with any of his exams, just pay 1500 Kunas to the tutor and the problem "would go away". Not surprisingly this guy can't wait to head back to Germany where he lived as a child. Another Croatian who visited the local planning office was told by the official there "that there are six of us in this office, pay us 2000 kuna each and we will deal with your case more quickly". I suppose you take your choice and run with the devil as best you can

Croatia as a country is a beautiful country, the scenery is sometimes breathtaking and the islands, the sea etc can still catch my breath.
The one thing I absolutely hate is the mentality of the people. They have no sense of responsibility, no drive to deliver quality in their job, no imagination, no sense of reason, basically they are a disaster in their professional careers. Not a single company here in Croatia delivers any quality whatsoever (unless they are foreign managed), the job is always half done, usually piss poor quality and that still makes me angry after all these years. The fact that I more or less have to expect to go back to a mechanic, garage, installation firm not once but usually 3 to 4 times after the job is 'completed' is ridiculous. Showing up on time is an art they have not mastered, delivering a product on the agreed time is something from another planet.
The worst part however is that nobody seems to care. All they can say is 'Yep, this is Croatia, this is the way we work'. If people want to make me mad they should simply say this when they f*cked up again.
I know I will never get used to this attitude, but I also know it will never ever change. Perhaps in 100 years there will be some change, but over the next decade nothing will change. Too bad.

“Darcy” The grass certainly does appear greener on the other side.
I know that Croatia does have a lot of problems and I only have first hand knowledge of Istria as that’s where I live. As for global warming in Istria, I grew bananas this year and they fruited
“Irac” I do try to read the local papers and I do appreciate what you are saying. There are unfortunately murders and crimes taking place all over the world including Croatia. But because there are less people here and less overcrowding it just appears less common and somehow I feel myself and my family are safer. In the last 12 months I can only remember 2 or 3 incidents in Istria that truly shocked me, whereas I find it’s a daily news occurrence in Britain. The roads here I admit are at times dangerous but all roads are. Statistics are also misleading and can be interpreted in several ways. For example. If there are 100 cars in Croatia and the accident rate is 2 in a100 per day then there are 2 accidents per day. If there are 1,000 cars in the Uk and the accident rate is 1 in a hundred there are 10 accidents. So which country has the safer roads. Suffice to say no matter which country you live in or however you manipulate the example all roads are dangerous. Re - Racial tension and ethnic tension again I can concur with you .It is a problem here but again it is no where near the problems that the UK are currently encountering. And I do hope that the Croatian Government soon address the situation . Re. Police – Poland – Ireland No I am not being discriminative The point that I am was trying to make was that there are so many Polish in that area now that they specifically employed the polish policemen to police them. Therefore is that anti discriminative, If your not Polish you cant get the job. Re - Girls prettier. All the women in the world are pretty lets just agree on that. But they aren’t half nice here !!! Re – Fight. You missed the point I think. What I was trying to say is that whenever I went out or when I go out in for a drink in England I always witness a fight especially on a Saturday night and yes they do here but it is a long way of the extent that it happens in the UK. Re- Organic wine from Cork. No I haven’t tried it, So next time you in Istria feel free to call in and I will help you sample it and we can start our on thread on the merits of Organic wine from Cork v Istrian wine. Of course we would have to do lots of research. !! “pocketvenus” Re food is better. Are you for real ? How can mass produced frozen and dried microwave foods, processed tinned food, over farmed and chemical induced products be any where near a “millions times better”. When you go to your local supermarket does your lettuce have mud on it? No because its pre packed in a bag. Ever wondered why its so crispy ? Did you know that tomatoes are not perfectly round and that they should actually smell of tomatoes. Did you know a real natural cucumber does not grow straight? If you prefer the taste of greenhouse food with all the insecticides on it then yes the UK food is better. Have a pot noodle for me In the last 10 years in the Uk there has been countless number of animal related diseases and culls due largely to mass production and over breeding Re – Tv. You can Keep It. Quick you have just missed Eastenders
“gmh” I agree. Also doing ok in Tennis, Skiing, water polo, handball, volleyball, basketball, swimming and Judo. For a small country Croatia do pretty good at most sports considering that the sports do not have millions of pounds of lottery money thrown at them. As to the Croatian football team. I am reminded daily, enough said
I was only commenting on what I read in the paper and no it wasn’t the mail or the express it was the guardian and the telegraph , and yes it is tabloid nonsense. One of the reasons for writing the thread in the first place was that I was shocked by what I read, maybe I do not read enough papers and maybe that’s the reason why.Mean while i will continue trying to live happy ever after in Croatia with all its beauty and all its faults

As someone said earlier, this is a mostly subjective comparison and depends mainly upon where the viewer stands and which way they look.
My position is the same as Mirko's - except the countries are reversed. I certainly understand his view, we are probably both getting the best from our lives in that we both have experienced both countries, just in reverse order.
I still hate the bloody winter! It's too cold here but it lasts too long there.

It is a fact that Croats, like Southern Europeans in general, don’t think twice about driving while under the influence or without a seatbelt. Croats are incredibly racist against Serbs in particular, but also anyone non-white. Some Croatian cops choose not to take statements from a foreigner against a Croat Croatia women - Lanky, mannish, bad complexion and 5 layers of make-up Brits don't expect women to drink half pints and women are treated as equals! (ie. There are not things that are ‘not discussed in front of women’) I do not eat any processed food, in the UK there is so much choice for meat-eaters, vegetarians and vegans, and factory eggs are being banned so I won't get salmonella like in hospital. And Brits know the meaning of the word vegetarian! Go back to your ancient, boring US rubbish on HRT with 10 million adverts! In the UK people do not pronounce the words ‘salary’ and ‘celery’ identically! If a British tennis player is on the verge of beating a Top 10 player, the BBC puts in on, unlike HRT who showed an ancient episode of Startrek in 2004 when Karolina Sprem was beating Venus Williams! No sport gets put off for mass!

Well driving is worse in Croatia than the UK, the stats prove it. The government has been trying to reduce the numbers of young deaths on the roads there for a while, hence zero alcohol and headlights on at all times.

No sport gets put off for mass! Most of your arguments are so minor, self opinionated and pathetic. Croats are incredibly racist against Serbs in particular, but also anyone non-white. - Croatia is not a very multi racial country so unlike England/ U.K it has not of yet had to reach the same tolerance levels. In England everyone one seems to hate everyone. We don't like the Scottish, Welsh and especially the Irish or as most like to politely put it 'pikeys.' Not to forget our lovely communities of South Asians or should I say p*ki's, of which we know so many adore. Some Croatian cops choose not to take statements from a foreigner against a Croat - The Police force over here is more for white officers than Asian, due to prejudices amongst officers. Some English officers prefer to take the word of the white guy over the black, but hey what can you do about it..? Croatia women - Lanky, mannish, bad complexion and 5 layers of make-up For someone who feels appearance isn't of importance why the nastiness? I could give a meaningless statement such as, English women: over weight, ugly, arrogant and stuck up. Brits don't expect women to drink half pints and women are treated as equals! (ie. There are not things that are ‘not discussed in front of women’) No you're right Brits expect women to drink whole pints. Also there are sovanistic men in every country. I do not eat any processed food, in the UK there is so much choice for meat-eaters, vegetarians and vegans, and factory eggs are being banned so I won't get salmonella like in hospital. And Brits know the meaning of the word vegetarian! You can be vegetarian anywhere in the world, if you know how to cook it all you have to do is get the ingredients. Also we don't have to take the step of eating eggs over here in hospital to get an illness. Spending a night in a ward and breathing in the air is enough to give us some type of bacterial infection. As the NHS have so kindly proven in many of their London hospitals. Go back to your ancient, boring US rubbish on HRT with 10 million adverts! Hello! have you never watched Sky or Virgin Media? Every other channel is American, with brakes every ten minutes. Unless your talking about channles 1 to 5 British TV is no better than Croatian.

To be fair, I don't like it when women drink pints either Oh and slat British tv even terrestrial is MUCH better than Croatian TV, that's regardless of whether you understand the language, but as you said that's a minor thing.
