I admit, the Croatian hospitals are scary on many levels (let's don't even go there with the corruption). I've only been to hosptials in Zagreb, perhaps they are better on the coastline - Dubrovnik and so forth?

On the coast, the popular view is that the hospitals in Zagreb are better (better treatment etc)

I admit, the Croatian hospitals are scary on many levels (let's don't even go there with the corruption). I've only been to hosptials in Zagreb, perhaps they are better on the coastline - Dubrovnik and so forth? Zagreb is overcrowded and especially in organizational segments most Zagreb hospitals are below average (except for Dubrava and a few reorganized wards in Rebro) and you'll probably find a more pleasant hospital elsewhere. OTOH, most of the expensive medical equipment can only be found in Zagreb. But never mind, free health care in Croatia sucks on oh so many levels. For starters bureaucracy has grown so humongous most nurses don't deal with patients, they deal with mountains of papers. As it happens in all other institutions blessed by communism and government touch, any information are unattainable, useful signs or helpful brochures are science fiction, while all personnel is infused with uselessnesses and lack of will to enforce even very simple organizational measures that would make our and their lives extremely simpler. Then comes the corruption fueled by general belief in population that "you have to bring presents to doctors and nurses". No way in hell will I ever bring a present to someone who deserves a punishment instead. And yeah, too many doctors are pompous bastards much too prone to errors. .

There's a balance between the sot take to health care found in the UK and Croatia and the US system, there's is heartless ours lacks funds...there must be a happy medium.

The only solution I see would be private hospitals but with government subsidies and strictly controlled policies of spending and patient acceptance. USA system is too inhumane, while government controlled systems are terribly inefficient and corruption-prone.
I know all three systems mentioned have many downsides, does there exist any other country which could be taken as a bright example?

Nobody that has been inside a Croatian hospital would seriously say they're comparable to Uk hospitals. They're medieval. They buy outdated equipment because the health minister owns a company that sells scanners, I know this as I competed with him. Does he have the GE, Phillips or Siemens franchise? My take on HR healthcare is that it is certainly not medieval - needs a wee bit of work maybe, but the hospital facilities and staff dedication i have seen are certainly comparabale to some of the NHS 'excuses' for hospitals/healthcare.........US healthcare IMO leaves a lot to be desired........

Scandinavia has excellent health care on all accounts, the Netherlands was fine when I lived there and broke a leg, although I'm not Dutch!

I just feel sorry for all the hard working Croats stabbed in the back by their corrupt colleagues at work.

I just feel sorry for all the hard working Croats stabbed in the back by their corrupt colleagues at work. Reading after 7 years this post, make's me cry :/ You clearly never knew Capio! He was greatly entertaining on here but bitter as hell and had nothing good to say about Croatia nor about Croatians. I've been here ten years now and have had four major (general anaesthetic) operations in HR hospitals. Yes, the equipment is a bit old, they don't have all the latest stuff and the decor is often pretty Dickensian. Don't be fooled, the timescales to get seen and treated are a fraction of the disgraceful situation in the UK, the staff are many times more professional and genuinely caring. All the important stuff is done well and I am much the better for having been treated early and comprehensively here than is my experience in the UK. Nobody lost my file, all my appointments were speedy (when necessary) and kept, everything was explained in English and the after care has been second to none. HR has some big problems, corruption and defeatism being my chosen pair, but the health system is as good as anyone's and better than most.

I know all three systems mentioned have many downsides, does there exist any other country which could be taken as a bright example? . I have to say 'yes' I've been living in Italy for 30 years now and have to say the Italian healthcare is excellent. We have two good hospitals within 20 mins drive and a super huge one 50 mins away. Small, even not so small surgical operations are booked in using a notepad and pencil... ie my friend diagnosed with a hernia went directly to the hospital where we were asked when she'd like the op, 'next Tuesday or Thursday' it was noted and job done! I believe in the uk that would have meant 6 months to a year of referrals. Oncology departments are particularly good and care exemplary even providing morphine pumps and nursing care at the patient's home. Whereas in the Uk a friend has had to wait two weeks just for test results! Food is pretty good too. I have only been to hospital once in Croatia, Sibenik, and although outwardly it was disturbingly run down, the care we received from the Doctors was wonderful, kind helpful and efficient and they would not accept payment (this was about 12 years ago)!
