Ok guys, there are so many posts here and elsewhere that talk of 'simply' moving to Cro (or wherever). Is it that simple ? I've got a reasonably well paid job here in England, if I were to give that up to move to Cro what would I be expected to live on there (the proceeds of the sale of my house ?). Is there even low income work easily available for a non-Croatian speaker (with a Croatian partner) or would I be draining my savings continually with no income ? Overall, I guess I'm asking - am I missing something obvious on how people just 'up sticks' and move overseas and manage to survive financially or is it just about a state of mind shift for me, i.e., if I want it enough go for it and just hope for the best ? If and when the money runs out then cross that bridge at that point ?

Most of them set up tin pot companies that last 6 months and go home with their tails between their legs, poor and bitter.
Do not move to Croatia, unless you have at least 150,000 euros. to invest and actually know what you're doing..or if you have a pension of some kind.

hello fan i don't believe it's that easy. but i'm sure some people who've actually done will reply. i believe many of them are in the tourism business and that's their source of income. as for your question about getting a job as a non-cro speaker - i think that would be a major problem. on the other hand, if you learn croatian, being a native speaker would be a definite bonus. i can't think of many jobs you could do without any knowledge of croatian, except maybe teaching english in a foreign languages school, but even for that you need to have some teacher training and certificates.

I didn't think that it would take you long to answer this Mr Emiz. What about contacts? You need this too, you can't get anywhere without this.

The last thing I'd want to do is put you off but..... I've been here for 5 weeks but have been fiddling at the edges and investigating for about a year before I came. I don't need to earn to live but I can't see how I would be able to survive if I needed a job. EMIZ has it right IMHO. Why do you want to come?

Thanks for the opinion Rib. Why would I want to come ? The better climate and general quality of life (all things being equal). Sadly for me they're not, financially at least. I guess I'm earning too much in UK to seriously consider giving it up, but it'd be nice to get the views of anyone who has done just that.

your good money in the UK won't go as far as it once did in Croatia, you need to think about that! I spend as much there as I do in the UK.

100% agree jackal, there are things cheaper (restaurants, home grown produce, council tax) but Konzum is the same as ASDA, shoes are hideously expensive, most other things are the same as the UK. Income MUST be a lot bigger than they say, you'd starve on the declared "average" income.

Unfortunately average income is not bigger than they say. You don't starve, you somehow adapt.

If you have loads of equity in your house in UK, sell it, buy a much cheaper house here with good sea views and the expansion capacity to convert to holiday lets, do the work, get a licence, get a web site, rent out for summer....and pray! Overall, I guess I'm asking - am I missing something obvious on how people just 'up sticks' and move overseas and manage to survive financially or is it just about a state of mind shift for me, i.e., if I want it enough go for it and just hope for the best ? if your life is nice in the uk and you are earning nice money and have nice friends . then why ruin that and move to croatia??? dont take your nice secure life in the uk forgranted. if you want to come to croatia ..save up some money , build a small holiday house and live in the uk but come here for summer holdidays, buy a nice boat to make the locals jelous and throw partys to make them really pull their hair out . . that way you will experience the best of both worlds. and the process of building the holiday house in croatia will make you thankful that you dont live in croatia. i have a deep rooted uhum... negativity ,towards croatians. its just a reflection of my experiences here and croatian community abroad. . maybe things have changed a little , but i doubt it. if you do move her e...be ruthless. being polite and nice , like digging your own grave . its a country where people push infront of eachother in lines and car parking. and thats how it is for everything in croatia. the only way to make money here is to get a good job through connections ,unless you wear a mini skirt , ofcourse. or start some shifty business that i havent been able to think of yet . save your self the trouble and stay in the uk . this country is one big headache. jelousy , corruption, many rude people and a commy mentality . the coast is just nice to look at

What cane I say that hasn't been said by the good bad and the ugly on this thread. Having lived here for 19 months, bought a house, furnishings, car, everything. Let's just say if I knew what was here I wouldn't do it. Nor would I believe it, that a place could be this way. I would NEVER ever beleieve it. No-one would talk me out of it, but, let me pass you over to my wife who was born here, has not been here for 35 years. She would say: there was nothing here then, when she left, there is LESS here now. Wanna buy a house? For a holiday...great. For a 52 week a year forever, well, some real effort has to be made. Real effort.
