Slatika - which part of the Uk are you familiar with? Your comments don't make sense for any region of the Uk where there are significant numbers of different ethnic groups (so it rules out London and most of the big cities for a start). It also would not apply to anyone with a television set. Maybe you have spent all your time in the Orkney or Shetland? (Apologies to anyone reading this from Orkney or Shetland... I strongly expect that you would also be able to make such a differentiation even if you couldn't draw on daily experience.) You would be suprised!! I'm talking greater London area, some people can be very ignorant and lack knowledge on different nationalities and races and so instead of learning about them they either dislike or dismiss them- its only what I've found, not an overall generalisation- people can be very divided and never really learn anything about others becuase they stay within their own communities

I speak English mother tongue, Dutch, Italian, Croatian and Serbian fluently, my German is getting pretty good and I also speak French, Norwegian and Swedish, and very good Swedish when I'm on the piss with Swedes! It was Eurovision that started off my love for languages, as well as the desire to learn my dad's language, which I had to do alone, as my mother doesn't speak a word of anything except English. That's why I hate them all singing in poor English, it really spoils it! However the lovely Željko Joksimoviæ came second singing in Serbian, so there's hope!!! Actually my Masters was on the subject of the development of the Croatian language in the 20th century, stressing that it was a different language than Serbian! ;D Jill, did you join in the World Cup celebrations? ;D Eurovision--!! your joking why?? Though I do love eurovision!

How long does it take you to learn each individual language and perfect it?

I agree to an extent - some Londoners know jack about the world. It amazes me that people still think Croatia is a no-go area. Returning to work (in London) after 8 weeks in Cro, a (intelligent, or so I thought) manager asked where I'd been, how it was etc. He was genuinely shocked. "Croatia?" "that's a bit risky isn't it?, aren't they still fighting?" I said it was safer then South London on a saturday night. He looked confused.

I've loved Eurovision since I was a child, for my sins, and I've been to 2 Doras, one Swedish "Dora" and the real thing this year in Athens! I was also on the British jury in 1990, when Eurovision was in Zagreb! Regarding the languages, I try to find people to practise with, read novels and listen to songs and sing them with a hairbrush in fron of the mirror! I have only lived in the UK, Croatia, the Netherlands and France, but have also spent long periods in Italy, and two summer courses in Sweden... I have always been great with words but crap with numbers, only scraped my GCSE maths by 1%!!!

Will you Croats ever realise that there is more to the UK than just London?! Whenever I ay I'm off to England, they say "oh, to London?" and I say "no, to Hull" and they look really confused!

"that's a bit risky isn't it?, aren't they still fighting?" quote] This does sum up the vast majority of English people - they neither know about or have any real interest in Croatia. If "Why many Croats do not like English" was because English people would struggle to find Croatia on a map and don't care a jot about the place, then at least they could have some (minor) reason!

London against Hull? How many English people know anything about Croatia capital Zagreb? Now there could be a job going for someone - isn't Croatia in London right now 'marketing' tourism?

i wouldn't put any money on a bet that over 25% of the British population know that Split is a place name and I would put any money on a sizeable portion knowing that Zagreb is the capital. A Place in the Sun, the buying property abroad magazine was running a feature on Dubrovnik in the summer. They sent me an email about it. In the email they refered to Dubrovnik as the capital! Even they don't know for Zagreb.
