Does any one know of any organizations who feed and or sterilize stray cats? I recently visited a few towns and saw loads of poor cats with baby kittens starving and living in rubbish bins, I will be returning in a few months and would like to help.

Yes , there is a problem with stray cats in Croatia. As far as I know there is no free neutering for cats in Croatia. The animal protection in Croatia has some way to go yet. I hope I am wrong, perhaps there are some organisations who deal with this. This issue needs strong lobbying IMO.

Got this from the site and would like to pass it on.

Thanks for the link Huegus

I have a very active Springer Spaniel who is also interested in knowing how many cats are in Croatia.

Hardly anybody keeps their dogs on a lead in Croatia, which often results in my dog who is on a lead, getting involved in fights.
As for the cats, I understand your concern, but you have to appreciate that many people can barely afford to feed themselves let alone worry about 100's of stray cats.

Yes that is understood but it doesn't cost anything to put down water for these babys or fresh scraps to eat they dont even have that. Just a little gesture can save their lives.

In Croatia, water does cost money and scraps? scraps of what? Some people cannot afford to waste any food.
Also on the coast I think they are viewed as a pest, if they feed them more will come.

Emizzzz-are the people of Croatia really that poor? I saw a TV commercial running in the New England area of the USA (specifically Boston) where a charity is asking for donations of $150.00 to buy a 'goat' for a Croatian family so they have milk/food. Is this legitimate?

I have never heard of that scheme and it sounds unusual to say the least, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be true.
Croatia is a country of extremes in every area, extreme weather, extreme wealth extreme poverty.
There is an emerging middle class, but basically this is a country split between those who have money and power and the vast majority of people who have very little.
That’s why I get annoyed by people who live in Zagreb earning 15,000 kunas a month and they say Croatia’s economy is good, I am happy blah blah.
I know for a fact that many people are trying to survive on as little as $200 a month.
