Apart from Powergen bumping the Gas prices up almost 25%, council tax rising 4%, lack of fresh water and the soaring crime rate, I would like to know why all 1880 members of this forum aren't living in Croatia

Make that 1879 members, since I am living in Croatia.
But why do you think that all members come from the UK ?

Well, it's obvious, innit? We're in the UK for baked beans and bottled curry sauce.

Could be financial handcuffs. Bus drivers are earning 30 UKP a year in London. A nation of wannabees maybe, for all the reasons that Mark (an in-joke) says, England is not a good place to live IMVHO but it takes a brave (or reckless in my case) person to take such a cut in income.
Why not the Dutch? You'd be better positioned to answer that one Mambo. Scots Elaine?

OK, I am just asking for views of Today's "Great Britain" compared with the alternative of living permanently in Croatia. Apart from the curry problem, by the way Uncle Ben's Curry sauce is a good alternative!

Well, one of the advantages of living in UK is the lack of corruption (I haven't come across it in any shape or form) and the speed and convenience of dealing with any practical task. I am in a position to make a living and execute most of my transactions with a touch of a button, from the comfort of my home. Indeed I am so used to everything running smooth and fast that I couldn't imagine anything less, and living in Croatia unfortunately means less.
I like the fact everything in UK is regulated and the rules are inforced. The smoking ban in public places is a fantastic new development. When, if ever, will that be a reality in Croatia?
On the rare occasion when I have to make a trip to the Croatian embassy in London, I am immediately transported to my homeland. 5 minutes in the embassy and I am going through a nervous breakdown.

what (as a commited smoker) I diskile about living the uk is the over re gulation, nothing quite like lighting up a ciggie while waiting for my luggage at split airport after a dull 2 hour smokeless flight. To work about an unregulated society 1 just needs the connections and knowledge of theunspoken rules of getting what you need, it takes time to learn these of course however once youv got the nanny state your stuck with a load of pompous non smokers, really I cant think of worse company to keep

Your attitude perfectly illustrates the finer points between british and croatian mentality. As a smoker, you damage the health of anyone who happens to be around you when you light up the cigarette. The law is there to protect the non-smokers right not to be exposed to passive smoking. If you chose to ruin your health by smoking, do it privately, without forcing others to participate through no choice of their own.

Ribaric,
To be honest................I have no clue why someone would want to live in Holland. That country is not a little bit full, it is simply overcrowded, too many regulations, too much rain, basically.......................it s*u*c*k*s* That is also the reason why I left that country a long long time ago.
Croatia has its good parts, but also its bad parts. If they would finally get rid of that d**n bureaucracy and corruption it would be a very good place to live. Unfortunately that won't happen too fast, so we have to live with it.

Ah! I'm with it now, eventually! The good side of the UK. BobsYourUncle very good point about making things happen, but stipe also has the grist of it. There are too many people sitting in offices making rules because "they know best".
OK, the good side! - But remember I'm a Londoner.
1. Income is high. 2. Services (banks, utilities) are excellent. 3. The trains work quite well. 4. There are opportunities for the hard worker and the quick witted. 5. ......struggling now.... Football is great. 6. They have DAB radio and SKY. 7. The Independent newspaper. 8. ...scraping the barrel now...Spitfire real ale. 9. 24 hour shops of all types.
I guess it's a bit like Holland without the inpenetrable language and a few hills.
I think I'll stick with Hrvatska, for a while at least.
I'd be interested why anyone would choose to live in Scotland, ROI, Belgium.......

Not sure about trains working well argument...there were so many major derailments in the last 10 years.
I would like to point out the Eurostar - going to Paris or beyond without the airport hassle, FANTASTIC!!
